Organic Calabrian Oval Oranges are a prized variety of Italian blond oranges grown organically in the sunny soils of Calabria. These citrus fruits are distinguished by their juicy pulp, sweet and aromatic flavour, and late ripening, which ranges from March to late June. Ideal for those looking for fresh, genuine fruit, Calabrian oval oranges are perfect to enjoy on their own, at the end of a meal, or to use in the kitchen for homemade jams, orange desserts, tarts, candied fruit, artisan sweets and citrus drinks.
Characteristics of the Calabrian Oval Orange
The "Calabrian oval" orange is an ancient variety of blond orange of high quality, little known and little marketed: despite its quality, in fact, it suffers on the market due to fierce competition from more well-known and more profitable cultivars. It is part of the large family of blond-fleshed oranges and is very late as it ripens from March to late June. The fruits are medium or large in size, have an oval shape, slightly elongated at the ends or ovoid, and have typical grooves at the base of the fruit. The peel, of medium thickness, tends to turn green again as ripening progresses, while the pulp is light orange in color, sweet in flavor, very rich in juice and with few or no seeds.
From a nutritional point of view, it is worth noting the high level of citric acid, mineral salts and vitamins A, B1, B2, C and PP, as well as polyphenols and flavonoids, all excellent antioxidant agents.
