Characteristics of the Fantastic Bergamot
This quality of Bergamot is the most cultivated (representing about 75% of the total). The fruit is quite large and resembles a lemon, its taste is bitter but sweetens during ripening.
The Bergamot is one of the miracles of Calabrian biodiversity, developing primarily in the soil of the province of Reggio. Its cultivation in this far corner of the boot has benefited from the clayiness of the soil and the dry summers followed by rainy autumns. Its name seems to derive from the Turkish "Beg armudi", meaning "Lord's Pear", and it is most likely a hybrid between bitter orange and lemon. The main characteristic is the fragrance emitted by its essence, which is abundantly used in the international cosmetics industry, but also from its leaves, which can be used to make excellent herbal teas. Recently, its use in cooking and pastry has greatly increased. It recently became a DOP (Protected Designation of Origin) product with the expression Bergamotto di Reggio Calabria.
